That's our range to replace a standard vinyl window, installed, with a typical price of about $900. For 10 windows that's roughly $4,250 – $12,250, typically about $9,000. Wood windows typically run about $1,300 each.
Estimate Our range, based on sources [1][2][3]. Planning numbers, not quotes. Size, frame material and the condition of the old frames move the price most.
Window replacement cost by frame material
Frame material sets the price band; size and style move you within it. The middle columns apply our per-window ranges to 10 windows, the count used by the Cost vs. Value report's window projects (3×5 ft double-hungs).[3]
| Frame material | Per window Estimate | 10 windows Estimate | Typical, 10 windows Estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | $425 – $1,225 | $4,250 – $12,250 | $9,000 |
| Fiberglass | $625 – $1,425 | $6,250 – $14,250 | $11,000 |
| Composite | $500 – $1,325 | $5,000 – $13,250 | $9,750 |
| Wood (clad or painted) | $775 – $2,500 | $7,750 – $25,000 | $13,000 |
| Aluminum | $200 – $550 | $2,000 – $5,500 | $3,250 |
Estimate Our range, based on sources [1][2][3]. For each tier we pooled the low, midpoint and high figure each source publishes for a comparable scope (a single benchmark figure counts once), then used the median as Typical and the middle half of the pooled figures as Low–High. HomeGuide's figures are installed prices per window; Angi's frame-material figures are its published per-window averages. Cost vs. Value's vinyl and wood benchmarks were divided by their 10 windows. See How we build our ranges.
What the sources say Sourced
HomeGuide puts a typical replacement at $450 to $1,500 per window, or $4,500 to $22,500 for the 10 to 15 windows in an average house.[1] Angi's 2026 average window project is $7,347, about $750 per window.[2] The 2025 Cost vs. Value report prices 10 insulated replacement windows at $22,073 in vinyl and $26,781 in clad wood, including new exterior trim wrap.[3]
Line-item breakdown: 10 vinyl windows Estimate
Here's how we'd price an insert (pocket) replacement of 10 standard double-hung windows where the old frames are sound: the units, installation, foam and sealant, aluminum trim wrap outside, and disposal. Interior trim stays put.
| Line item | How we priced it | Amount Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 10 vinyl double-hung replacement windows Materials | 10 × $675, the midpoint of HomeGuide's per-window unit price[1] | $6,750 |
| Remove sashes and stops, set, shim, insulate and seal, 2.5 hrs per window Labor | 25 hrs × $29.12/hr median wage for carpenters[4] × 1.7 labor burden | $1,240 |
| Wrap exterior trim in aluminum coil, 1 hr per window Labor | 10 hrs × $29.12/hr median wage for carpenters[4] × 1.7 labor burden | $500 |
| Coil stock, low-expansion foam, sealant, shims and fasteners Materials | Our allowance, $45 per window | $450 |
| Interior touch-up and cleanup Labor | 6 hrs × $22.66/hr median wage for construction laborers[4] × 1.7 labor burden | $230 |
| Disposal of old windows Materials | Our allowance | $150 |
| Overhead & profit Our assumption | 20% on the labor and materials lines above. Installed prices and fees already include the installer's margin, so we don't mark them up again. | $1,860 |
| Line-item total | Before contingency and regional adjustment | $11,200 |
Estimate Our line-item build comes to $11,200, about 24% above our blended typical of $9,000 for 10 vinyl windows. The build assumes ground-floor access and sound frames. Rotted sills or full-frame replacement push real bids higher. Method: How we build our ranges.

Insert vs. full-frame
An insert (pocket) window slips into the old frame and leaves interior trim alone. Full-frame replacement strips the opening to the studs, which costs more but lets the installer fix rot and flash the opening properly.
Size and style
Standard double-hungs and sliders are the cheapest to replace. Large picture windows, casements, bays and bows cost more per opening.
Glass package
Low-E coatings, argon fill and triple panes add cost. HomeGuide says low-E adds 10% to 20% to the window price.[1] Sourced
Older homes
Angi says older or historic homes can add $100 to $500 per window for non-standard sizes, frame repairs and alterations.[2] Sourced Our calculator includes it as an option.
Upper floors
Second-story windows usually need ladders or staging and two installers, which adds labor.
Contingency Estimate
Rotted sills and framing are the usual surprise once the old windows come out. A 10% cushion is a sensible planning choice. That's our guidance, not a sourced figure.

Estimate Derived, not published. Our exterior index divides each division's 2025 Cost vs. Value average for six exterior projects (vinyl and fiber-cement siding, vinyl and wood windows, wood and composite decks) by the national average and averages the six ratios.[3] The typical column multiplies our national typical by the index. Window replacement cost FAQ
How much does it cost to replace all the windows in a house?
HomeGuide puts 10 to 15 standard windows at $4,500 to $22,500.[1] By our ranges, 10 vinyl windows typically cost about $9,000, and 10 wood windows about $13,000.
Do replacement windows pay for themselves at resale?
Partly. In the 2025 Cost vs. Value report, vinyl window replacement recouped about 76% of its cost nationally and wood about 70%.[3] Comfort and energy savings are the other half of the return.
What's the difference between insert and full-frame replacement?
An insert fits inside the existing frame, so it's faster and cheaper. Full-frame replacement removes the whole unit down to the rough opening; Angi notes it's the right choice when the frame is damaged or rotted.[2]
How long does it take to replace a window?
HomeGuide says 30 to 60 minutes for a single-hung window under 10 sq ft, and up to a full day for a large bay or bow.[1] A crew can usually do a typical house in a day or two.
Do I need a permit to replace windows?
Usually not for same-size replacements. HomeGuide says changing a window's size needs a permit, typically $50 to $200 for reframing the opening.[1] Rules vary, so check locally.
