Quick answer Estimate
$6 – $11.50 per sq ft

That's our range to pour a plain concrete patio, installed, with a typical price of about $7.50 per square foot. A 20×20 ft (400 sq ft) patio typically costs about $3,000 in plain concrete and about $5,000 stamped. Site prep, removing an old slab and a permit can add to that if they aren't in the quote.

Estimate Our range, based on sources [1][2]. Planning numbers, not quotes. Finish, site prep and access move the price most.

Concrete patio cost by finish

The finish is the biggest choice you make. Plain gray concrete is the cheapest; staining and stamping add labor and skill, and stamped patterns with several colors cost the most.

Estimate Our range, based on sources [1][2]. For each tier we pooled the low, midpoint and high figure each source publishes for a comparable scope (a single benchmark figure counts once), then used the median as Typical and the middle half of the pooled figures as Low–High. We pooled HomeGuide's and Angi's installed per-square-foot ranges for each finish. For plain concrete we also used Angi's $2,400 – $6,400 price for a 20×20 ft patio, divided by its 400 sq ft. See How we build our ranges.

What drives the price

  • Finish. Stamping and staining can double or triple the per-foot price of plain concrete.
  • Site prep. Sloped or uneven yards need grading, and an old slab has to come out first. Angi puts leveling at $1,000 – $3,200.[2]
  • Thickness and reinforcement. Most patios are 4 inches thick; hot tubs and outdoor kitchens call for 6 inches and rebar.[1]
  • Shape and size. Curves, steps and multiple levels need custom forms. Bigger patios cost less per square foot.
  • Access. Getting ready-mix concrete to a hard-to-reach back yard adds expense, and steep or poor ground needs extra labor and reinforcement.[2]

Concrete patio FAQ

How much does a 20x20 concrete patio cost?

Typically about $3,000 in plain concrete by our estimate ($2,400 – $4,600). HomeGuide puts a basic 20×20 ft patio at $1,600 – $4,800 and Angi at $2,400 – $6,400.[1][2]

How much is a concrete patio per square foot?

Our range for plain concrete is $6 – $11.50 per sq ft, typically $7.50. Stamped concrete typically runs about $12.50 per sq ft by our blend of HomeGuide and Angi.[1][2]

Is stamped concrete worth the extra cost?

It costs more, typically about $12.50 per sq ft versus $7.50 for plain concrete, but it looks like stone or brick for less than pavers or natural stone. HomeGuide puts paver patios at $10 – $30 per sq ft for comparison.[1]

Do I need a permit for a concrete patio?

It depends on your town and the patio's size. When one is required, HomeGuide and Angi both put permits at $50 – $400.[1][2] Your contractor usually pulls it.

How long does a concrete patio last?

HomeGuide puts a properly installed concrete patio at 30 to 50 years.[1] Angi recommends sealing every three to five years to prevent cracks and chips.[2]
