Quick answer Estimate
$8.75 – $13.50 per sq ft

That's our range to replace an asphalt driveway, including tearing out the old one, with a typical price of about $11.25 per square foot. A 600 sq ft two-car driveway typically costs about $6,800 in asphalt and about $9,000 in concrete. Grading, a new apron and drainage can add to that.

Estimate Our range: new surface plus removal, based on sources [1][2][3][4][5]. Planning numbers, not quotes. Size, material and base condition move the price most.

Driveway cost by material

Asphalt and concrete are the two most common driveway surfaces. These are installed prices for the new surface; removing the old driveway is extra (see below).

For each tier we pooled the low, midpoint and high figure each source publishes for a comparable scope (a single benchmark figure counts once), then used the median as Typical and the middle half of the pooled figures as Low–High. What drives the price

  • Size. Driveways are priced by the square foot. HomeGuide's two-car example (24×24 ft) is twice the area of its one-car example (12×24 ft).[1]
  • Material. Asphalt is usually cheaper to install but needs sealing every few years; concrete costs more and lasts longer. HomeGuide puts asphalt at 15–30 years and concrete at 30–40.[1]
  • Tear-out. Breaking up and hauling away concrete costs more than removing asphalt.
  • Base and grading. A failed or soft base has to be dug out and rebuilt so the new surface drains and doesn't crack. Grading and base prep run $5 – $8 per sq ft by our blend.[1][3][4]
  • Thickness and finish. HomeGuide puts a 6-inch concrete slab for heavy vehicles at $8 – $20 per sq ft; stamping and color add more.[3]
  • Apron and permit. Many towns require a permit and set rules for the apron where the driveway meets the street.

Driveway replacement FAQ

How much does it cost to replace a driveway?

For asphalt, including removal of the old driveway, our range is $8.75 to $13.50 per sq ft, typically $11.25, so about $6,800 for 600 sq ft. Concrete typically runs about $9,000. HomeGuide puts replacement at $4 – $15 per sq ft and Angi puts asphalt replacement at $8 – $15.[1][4]

Is asphalt or concrete cheaper for a driveway?

Asphalt, usually: our typical installed price is $9.50 per sq ft versus $12.50 for concrete.[2][3][4][5] Concrete lasts longer and needs less upkeep, which narrows the gap over time.

How much does it cost to remove an old driveway?

By our blend, about $1.25 – $2 per sq ft for asphalt and $2 – $3.75 for concrete, typically $1.75 and $2.50.[1][3][4] Many replacement quotes include it; check that yours does.

Do I need a permit to replace a driveway?

Most cities require one for new driveways and replacements but not for repairs, according to HomeGuide, which puts permits at $50 – $200.[1]

Should I resurface or replace my driveway?

Resurfacing is cheaper if the base is sound: HomeGuide puts asphalt resurfacing at $1 – $3 per sq ft and Angi puts an asphalt overlay at $3 – $7.[1][4] Replace it when cracks are deep and widespread, water pools, or the base has failed.
