For a full, same-layout remodel of a 150 sq ft kitchen, our range is $26,250–$52,500, typically $37,500 ($175–$350 per sq ft). A quote above about $52,500 is high for that scope at U.S. average prices, and above about $65,500 it's very high, unless the job moves walls or plumbing, uses custom cabinets or premium appliances, or the kitchen is larger.

What a normal kitchen remodel quote looks like
"Kitchen remodel" covers everything from new counters and paint to a gutted room with walls moved. Before you decide a bid is too high, match it to the right scope and size. Our ranges are per square foot of kitchen floor, shown here for a 150 sq ft kitchen.

Example: is $60,000 too much for a kitchen remodel?
For a full, same-layout remodel of a 150 sq ft kitchen at U.S. average prices, our checker says: High. Your quote of $60,000 is 14% above the high end of our range ($52,500). That price fits a larger kitchen, a layout change, custom cabinets or a high-cost metro. In a major or upscale remodel with the layout changing, $60,000 is below our typical $65,250.
Why kitchen quotes run high
- Cabinets. They're usually the biggest line. Angi puts stock cabinets at $100 – $300 per linear foot and custom at $500 – $1200.[2] Ask which grade the bid includes.
- Moving things. Relocating the sink, range or a wall means new plumbing, gas, venting and electrical, plus permits and drywall.
- Appliances and counters. A premium appliance package or natural stone counters can add tens of thousands. Check whether they're in the bid or set as allowances.
- Hidden work. Old wiring, undersized electrical service and damaged subfloor turn up once cabinets come out.
- Design and management. Design fees, permits and a general contractor's markup are normal parts of a fair bid; Angi notes general contractors typically charge a percentage of the project to manage it.[2]
- Location. Labor costs differ by region; see the table below.
What to do if your quote looks high
- Check the scope. Use the quote checker with the right finish level, your kitchen size and your metro.
- Ask for an itemized bid with cabinets, counters, appliances, plumbing, electrical, flooring, permits and allowances listed separately.
- Get two more bids on the same written scope and compare them line by line. Our guide to comparing contractor bids shows how.
- Hold a contingency. Plan 10%–20% for surprises; our contingency calculator suggests a number for your home.

Kitchen quote FAQ
Is a $60,000 kitchen remodel quote too high?
For a 150 sq ft kitchen with the same layout, it's above our $26,250–$52,500 range for a full remodel at U.S. average prices. It's reasonable for a bigger kitchen, a layout change, custom cabinets or a high-cost area.
How much should a kitchen remodel cost?
Typically about $15,750 for a refresh, $37,500 for a full same-layout remodel and $65,250 for a major remodel of a 150 sq ft kitchen, by our blended ranges.[1][2][3]
How much is a kitchen remodel per square foot?
Our ranges run $85–$140 per sq ft for a refresh, $175–$350 for a full remodel and $325–$735 for major work.[1][2][3] Small kitchens cost more per square foot because appliances and permits don't shrink with the room.
Why do kitchen remodel quotes vary so much?
Bids for the same kitchen can price different cabinet grades, appliance allowances, counters and scope. Compare them line by line, not by total, and ask what each one excludes.
How many kitchen remodel quotes should I get?
At least three, on the same written scope, with allowances spelled out. A bid that's far below the others often leaves something out.
